Intel’s Ivy Bridge coming Q1 2012, growing festive moss while you wait

If you were religiously awaiting the fruition of last month’s Intel leak, brace yourself: we’ve got another one. Although Intel’s updated roadmap hasn’t changed anything per se, it does offer a few specifics. Whereas the previous schedule only suggested we’d be crossing the Ivy Bridge in the first half of 2012, the new roadmap shows the 22 nanometer processor penned in at the end of the first quarter. The Sandy Bridge E series is still on schedule for Q4 however, so unless you just have to have native USB 3.0 and DirectX 11 support, you still have plenty to look forward to. Otherwise, we’ll see you in April.

Linus Torvalds releases Linux kernel version 3 to celebrate 20 years of penguin-powered computing

It’s been nearly twenty years since Linus Torvalds let loose Linux on an unsuspecting world, and yesterday he finally updated the open source OS kernel to version 3.0. This third iteration, currently named 3.0.0-rc1, comes 15 years after 2.0 first hit the web and brings driver support for Microsoft Kinect — a move that should have visions of sugar plum fairies (or maybe just Android avatars) dancing in hackers’ heads. Also included is code optimized for AMD’s Fusion and Intel’s Ivy and Sandy Bridge silicon, and some updated graphics drivers, too. Despite these tasty new treats, Torvalds is quick to point out that this new release is an evolutionary change and unleashing the big three-oh was all about moving into a third decade of distribution, not about overhauling the OS. There’s still work to be done, as it is a release candidate in need of refinement, but curious coders can grab the latest Linux at the Kernel.org source link below.

Intel Smart Connect and Rapid Start technologies unveiled, coming by the holidays

As part of its keynote at Computex today, Intel unveiled a pair of new sleep-related technologies, though funnily enough, neither of them is particularly boring. Smart Connect checks up periodically on web apps you have open while your computer is in sleep mode — meaning that email clients and in-browser web apps like Twitter and Facebook will update themselves without the need for you to flip the computer on in full. Updates will be ready and waiting for you when you get back. Rapid Start is a new hibernation mode that can resume within 5 to 6 seconds and can remember your computer’s state with zero power. Though, admittedly, the zero-power operation doesn’t look like it can be maintained for too long, the hibernation itself can keep your computer going for up to 30 days. Pretty neat stuff. It’s all coming to Sandy Bridge laptops with Windows 7 soon, with widespread availability promised by the holidays.

Varian Samsung Galaxy S II dengan NFC Terungkap?

Varian baru Samsung Galaxy S II telah ditemukan dari Vietnam yang dijepret dengan menggunakan kamera buram. Varian ini memakai kode nama I9101 dengan bentuk seperti seri I900 Galaxy S II original. Diperkirakan varian ini adalah merupakan versi dengan NFC yang akan dikirim bulan Juni nanti di Inggris dan wilayah lain yang mendukung implementasi layanan NFC.

Sebelum ini diketahui bahwa selain Galaxy S II seri I9100, Samsung juga menyiapkan dua versi lagi untuk melebarkan sayap pemasarannya. Seri pertama dalah I9103 yang berbasis chipset Tegra2 sementara satunya adalah Galaxy S II dengan kemampuan NFC. Jadi bocoran gambar kali ini diperkirakan adalah Galaxy S II dengan layanan NFC.

Pengguna handset yang mengambil gambar ini mengatakan bahwa perangkat terpaku hanya di layar booting sehingga belum ada informasi spesifikasi yang dapat digali. Semenara itu silakan simak demo NFC di Samsung Galaxy S II sebagaimana dipamerkan saat MWC 2011 lalu.

Microsoft Winner of the Best Multinational Workplaces 2011 in Europe Award

Microsoft is the European king of the best workplaces on the continent, according to the Great Place to Work Institute.

The inaugural winner of the Best Multinational Workplaces 2011 in Europe award is just the latest accolade that the software giant received from the Great Place to Work Institute, although the organization has little to do with the laurels other than surveying the company’s employees.

According to the Redmond giant, in excess of 12,000 of its workers in various markets across the pond participated in the survey.

Still, Microsoft is no stranger to offering Europeans great places to work, since this is not exactly the company’s first award from the Great Place to Work Institute.

“Being named Best Place to Work in Europe for the fourth year in a row is a great honor for us, especially because it’s an employee-driven award,” revealed Jean-Philippe Courtois, president, Microsoft International.

“We believe the combination of our mission, our people and constantly finding new ways to use technology to help employees communicate and collaborate across cities, borders and around the world, are vital ingredients for attracting, retaining and motivating Europe’s best talent.”

The Great Place to Work Institute surveyed over than 1.5 million employees across Europe, with Microsoft ending up besting 1,380 companies.

In previous years, the software giant was awarded the Best Large Workplace in Europe accolade three years standing.

“Winning the top spot on our new European Best Multinational Workplaces list, on the back of several national awards, reflects Microsoft’s continued success in creating a working environment where people can thrive,” added José Tolovi Jr, Global CEO for the Great Place to Work Institute.

“The new list recognizes companies that create great workplaces across country borders, as well as cultural and language differences. Operating successfully in multiple countries is a complex job and Microsoft has shown how to create a great workplace in multiple countries through a combination of leadership and smart use of technology.”

Microsoft Dapat Untung Besar Dari Ponsel Android

Setahun yang lalu Microsoft menandatangani sebuah perjanjian dengan HTC dimana Microsoft akan mendapatkan royalti dari tiap ponsel Android yang dibuat oleh HTC karena memakai teknologi dari Microsoft. Minggu ini analis dari Citigroup, Walter Pritchard mengatakan kalau royalti yang diterima Microsoft adalah 5 dolar dari tiap ponsel Android HTC.

Pada akhir tahun lalu, HTC memproyeksikan akan menjual sekitar 60 juta unit ponsel Android tahun ini. Dengan 5 dolar per-ponsel, Microsoft berarti akan dapat 300 juta dolar hanya dari HTC tahun ini. Pritchard memperkirakan Microsoft akan berusaha untuk melalukan hal yang serupa dengan produsen ponsel Android lain yang memakai paten miliknya.

Pada akhir 2010 lalu Microsoft telah menggugat Motorola atas 9 paten untuk sinkronisasi email, kalender dan kontak, jadwal rapat, notifikasi aplikasi atas perubahan sinyaln dan baterai milik Microsoft yang digunakan pada ponsel Android. Secara total pada kuartal pertama tahun ini, Pritchard mengatakan ada 23 tuntutan besar yang berhubungan dengan paten yang menyerang Android.

3D HTML5 video shows up in Firefox

You can watch 3D videos via HTML5 on YouTube, starting today. The catch? This new feature is limited to Firefox 4, and to people who have a specific kind of Nvidia graphics card.

YouTube currently hosts “several thousand” 3D videos that it will encode and play back in WebM format, according to a blog post by Mozilla Director of Platform Product Management Chris Blizzard. Only people who have Nvidia 3D Vision graphics cards will be able to see those videos in 3D, and only if they are played in Firefox.

If you have the 3D Vision hardware, search YouTube for “yt3d,” which will bring up videos encoded in 3D. You will also have to set your 3D hardware mode.

• NVIDIA GeForce driver Release 275 or later

As the requirements listed above indicate, 3D HTML5 video on YouTube can only be watched by a small segment of the Web browsing public. However, the mere fact that HTML5 video standards are still growing and introducing new abilities, such as today’s 3D announcement, indicates that HTML5 video’s potential is far from fully tapped. Given the continuing and developing support for HTML5 in the top 5 browsers, it probably won’t take long for Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera to follow Firefox’s lead here.
